Communication Arts (Reading)
A knowledgeable kindergarten student:

·      develops and applies pre-reading skills (R)
o  understands concepts about print: print is read, spoken words match print
o  applies concepts about print: indicates first letter in words, recognizes words with familiar beginning sound
o  recognizes some high frequency words
o  identifies upper and lower case letters
o  knows consonant sounds
o  uses phonics to decode words: phonemes, rhymes
o  recognizes story structure: character traits, story events, details understands logical relationships: simple sequence, compare/contrast
o  interprets information: predicts outcomes
o  understands that books present stories, real and fantasy situations, information
o  views reading as a positive and enjoyable experience

Social Studies

o  identifies the American flag, recites the Pledge of Allegiance, and states that the President is the leader of the United States
o  develops an awareness of the significance of Thanksgiving and Martin Luther King Jr. Day
·      understands and applies geographic concepts and positional words (R)
o  shows location of things using positional words (left, right, over, under, above and below)
o  recognizes that maps are flat and globes are round as representations of earth
·      understands concepts of past, present, and future
o  recognizes people, objects, and events of today and long ago participates in daily calendar routines
o  identifies the days of the week

·      demonstrates an awareness of individuals or groups that have shaped the world (R)

 Art

o  discovers a variety of lines: diagonal, etc.
o  identifies geometric and free-form shapes in the environment 
o  mixes colors (red, blue, yellow, orange, green, violet) 
o  identifies light and dark colors 
o  demonstrates understanding of pattern and variation
·      describes works of art (R)
o  discusses how artists use shape, pattern, texture
o  discusses art in everyday life (i.e. clothing, costumes, masks)
·      relates art to history, culture, and other disciplines
o  draws portraits
o  expresses feelings with lines
o  uses art and movement to express feelings
o  understands that people make art for costumes, masks, etc.
